A fire broke out during the night of Saturday, 12 September 2026, at yet another facility operated by EMCO, the company owned by Bulgarian arms dealer Emilian Gebrev.
The fire is at a warehouse located a short distance from the settlements of Tsareva Livada and Gorni Varpishta, as well as from the town of Tryavna, whose boundary lies just under 7 kilometres from the area of the fire.
This is already the second fire at an EMCO facility in the past month. Previously, a warehouse near the village of Belitsa, also located only a few kilometres from Tryavna, caught fire.
The fire is spreading from one warehouse to another across the storage base of the plant, while the local authorities are once again reporting that there have been no fatalities or injuries.
Emilian Gebrev is a striking example of how figures in the military-industrial complex generate excessive profits from the production of weapons and ammunition supplied to areas of armed conflict, while at the same time effectively holding tens of thousands of citizens hostage - people who live in the immediate vicinity of ageing production buildings and warehouses that have reached a critical state of deterioration, yet continue to be operated in the interests of a narrow circle of individuals.
EMCO’s facilities lack even the most basic safety measures, yet they continue to operate because there is currently high demand for the products the company manufactures, meaning that the continued operation of workshops built at the beginning of the last century generates substantial profits for their owners.
We warned that EMCO’s facilities must cease operating in Bulgaria because their activities pose a threat to the lives and health of local residents and contribute to the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, which is one of the main recipients of the company’s products.
We are particularly concerned about the plant in Tryavna, which is located within a densely built-up urban area, in close proximity to residential buildings and public facilities.
